Saturday Division 1 Result | 14/3/26
Strand Rovers 1-2 Drumbar United
Notoriously a tough place to go, Drumbar travelled to Maghery this afternoon for league action against 2nd-placed Strand Rovers. After a cagey opening, the visitors took the lead just after the half-hour mark with a goal as good as you’ll see anywhere this weekend. Andrew Monaghan drove through the Strand midfield before releasing Odhran Meehan down the left flank. Sprinting at full tilt, Meehan delivered a superb cross which was met emphatically by Jacques McLeod to put Drumbar ahead.Strand responded just before half time. A long throw was initially cleared by the Drumbar defence, but the hosts capitalised on the second ball and fired home from the edge of the box.
The second half continued in the same fashion as the first had ended, with both sides battling for every ball and chances created at either end.For the second week running, it looked like the points would be shared between the two sides. However, deep into added time, Oisín Ebbs broke free for Drumbar. His initial effort on goal was brilliantly saved, and further follow-up attempts from McLeod and Monaghan were also denied, before the ball fell back to Ebbs, who buried his finish to the net.Drumbar withstood some very late pressure from set pieces to see out an excellent 2-1 victory.
Difficult to single anyone out after such a hardworking team performance, but Gary Spencer, Adam Gillespie and McLeod deserve a mention for their performances.
Well done lads 🇶🇦 Back at home next weekend ⚽️
